How to Clean Makeup Brushes with Baking Soda

If you wear makeup regularly, you know how important it is to have clean makeup brushes. They are the best way to get an even application of your makeup products.

My wife loves applying her makeup, but she hates cleaning the brushes. I’ve heard from her that applying multiple layers of the same color with the same brush will eventually cause it to stop picking up pigment properly.

However, it’s more than just an annoyance though, it can get expensive! New makeup brushes ain’t cheap.

While you can buy premade cleaners, if you’re looking for a more natural alternative, baking soda is the way to go.

So, if you’re like my wife and you don’t clean your makeup brushes as often as you should, here’s a quick and natural way to clean them with baking soda.

You just mix 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda with warm water and soak your makeup brushes in the solution for 20-30 minutes. Then just rinse with running water and dry with paper towels. It’s that simple!

Below is a more detailed step-by-step guide.

Let’s begin!

What You’ll Need:

1-2 tablespoons of baking soda
Container (A small bowl works)
Warm water
Paper towels

Can I Use Vinegar with Baking Soda to Clean Makeup Brushes?

Yes. You certainly can!

You can mix 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar with a cup of water. Then let your makeup brush soak for a minute. You should notice a lot of the buildup mixing with the water.

In some cases, this should be enough to clean the makeup brushes. If not, then proceed with the baking soda method above.

How Often Should You Clean Makeup Brushes?

Clean your makeup brushes at least once a week.

While makeup brushes do a good job of applying makeup, they also have a tendency to collect a lot of bacteria and can be a breeding ground for germs.

Clean brushes will help ensure a more even application, and they will also prevent acne and skin irritation since you will not be spreading all those germs around your face.

So always keep your makeup brushes clean.

Conclusion:

There you go. That’s how I clean my wifes’ makeup brushes with baking soda. My wife is happy to be using clean makeup brushes all the time, and I am happy to be saving a few bucks.

It’s a win-win!
